12 : 15 P.M. = It‘s quarter past twelve.
3:35 P.M. = It‘s twenty – five to four.
7:15 P.M. = It‘s quarter past seven.
9:45 P.M. = It‘s quarter to ten.
01:42 A.M. = It‘s eight minutes to two.
11:30 A.M. = It‘s half past eleven.
04:05 P.M. = It‘s five past four.
10:00 A.M. = It‘s ten o‘clock.

** A.m. is used to tell time after 12 midnight to before 12 noon.
P.m. is used to tell time between 12 noon to 12 midnight.

Telling the Time

To tell someone what the time is, we can say, “The time is …..” or , more usually, “It‘s……”
Here is a typical dialogue:
Question : What‘s the time, please?
Answer : It‘s three o‘clock.

Grammar Focus: Prepositions of Time
“In” is used with months, and seasons.

Examples:

- My birthday is in December.
- Ajarn Some poet fot the doctoral degree in 2006
- Thai people celebrate Songkran Festival in summer.

“In” is also used with the expressions:
In the morning
In the afternoon
In the evening
In the night time

Like to read vs. like reading

- When expressing feelings or preferences, the verb like can be followed by an infinitive or a gerund.

- The two forms are equally common.

Do you like to dance? / Do you like watching TV?
Peter likes to dance. / Jane likes going to the movies.
I like watching TV. / I enjoy watching TV.

- Do you enjoy going to the movies? / I sure do!
- Do you enjoy going to restaurants? / Yes, I do.
- What do you enjoy doing on the weekend /I enjoy going out with my friends
Like VS Enjoy

The verbs like an enjoy are synonyms.

- When describing an activity, enjoy is always followed by a gerund.
Do you enjoy walking in the park?
Sarah enjoys reading.

Jason : It’s not very big, but that’s OK. I don’t like to spend

Ask someone the way

Excuse me can you tell me the way to the hotel, please?

I’m afraid I don’t know.
I’m afraid I can’t help you.
Tell where places are located

One way to say where a place is located is to say how the place relates to another place. You can locate a place by using prepositions of location.
- It’s next to the bookstore.

- It’s on the first street across from the park.
- It’s between post office and the bookstore.
- It’s past the hospital on the right.
- It’s at the end of the street.
- It’s opposite the hotel.
- It’s under the big sign.
- It’s over the bridge.
